Adding EPEL to Oracle Linux

In an earlier post I wrote about how to install git from source.

I’ve found an easier way. Add the EPEL repository to YUM.

The EPEL is Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux. And in there are a lot of goodies. Among them – git and git-svn.

The fast way is to do the following:

# rpm -Uvh http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/i386/epel-release-5-4.noarch.rpm

For some reason that fails on my installation. But this works:

# cd /tmp
# wget http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/i386/epel-release-5-4.noarch.rpm
# rpm -Uvh ./epel-release-5-4.noarch.rpm

Then to install git all you have to do is

# yum install git
# yum install git-svn

Hey: thanks for taking the time of writing up this important information. I continually make an effort to more my comprehension of matters. Whether or not I agree or disagree, I love information and facts. I try to remember the olden times if the only source of data was the library or even the newspaper. They each look so old fashion. Please excuse my bad english : )

I remember. That was the time when you had to check a newspaper for job-offerings.
